To this point in The Inferno, we have learned about sins and symbolic retribution through Circle 7. Which contrapasso do you feel is the mostsymbolic and befitting to the sin? Explain. Which contrapasso do you feel is the least symbolic and unbefitting to the sin. Explain. You must respond with at least 100 words, but you need only respond to me.

The contrapasso that I think is most fitting is the muddy marsh of the Styx and the sullen who stew beneath its surface. In life its easy to become bogged down with every day tasks and became depressed and sullen. While it maybe easy it is obviously not worth it and this contrapasso exactly mirrors the sin of depression and the darkness it causes in your soul.

The most symbolic, for me, happens to be the sinners that are trapped in the muddy grossness that is the Styx. Seeing as these are the sinners that refused to see the light, or good out of everything, they are now refused light themselves and trapped in, literally, the darkest part of hell. As for the one that is less symbolic, I would say it would be those that are trapped in the Vestibule. The Opportunists. I don't necessarily catch on to how the punishment fits the sin, chasing a banner while being stung by wasps.

I feel as if the punishment of circle two is easy to understand but I don't think it fits the sin very well. I think that being tossed about by a tempest is a little low key for Hell. In circle one (limbo) it's pretty easy to understand why the people who didn't pick a side are forever stuck trying to get the banner.

I believe the most punishing circle is the third. Gluttony is what is punished n the third circle, the people are forced to lie in vile and filth for the rest of eternity. The slush is formed from the never ending icy rain falling and feces and human excrement falling from the sky. This is a great relation to the sin the caused because there whole lives the ate and drank all they wanted and eventually just made gross things of themselves, so forever on, they have to lie in the wastes they helped create.

I personally think that the punishment for circle six, The Heretics, fits the sin best. This is a place where those who denied the existence of God, and afterlife. Theses souls are trapped in fiery tombs, and after the day of judgement these tombs will close forever. The contrapasso in this is that since these souls did not believe in anything after life, they get exactly what they thought they would. Nothing more than a tomb. Now the contrapasso that does not make sense to me is circle four, The Hoarders and the Wasters. The sin here is those who in life lacked moderation in regulating their expense. For punishment they are to carry weights in mobs, and basically clash with another mob. I just didn't understand how that ties into hoarding/wasting.

It is interesting to see all the circles, their sin and their punishment. However, what I feel was the less symbolic to the actual sin is probably the Styx. The muddy and mucky marsh is really creepy and everything, but doesn't necessarily fits the sin to be trapped in it. And whenever they cry out no one can understand them. All because they died of anger, there questions go unanswered. Having to be trapped down there and not see any light can go along with anger but doesn't really fit why its like that. It doesn't really go with being angry on earth. I feel like that is the less symbolic one from the sin.

Its werid to see all the circles of sin and how they all have different levels of meanings. Not knowing what may happen feeling like you have no where to go. Trapped in these circles of hell especially with the mushy muddy river. And how the scaryness. Hopefully Dante remains with his mind mysterly wondering

I think that the contrapasso that fits the sin the best is the souls who are doomed under the muddy marsh. They lived sullen lives refusing to see the light or the happiness in things. But also the contrapasso where they are condemned to chase after the banner while they are stung by wasps and hornets and their blood and puss is eaten by maggots because they never made their decision in life. I think the least is where the righteous pagans are to live with no hope. I don't understand the point of not being in the pit of hell but being in hell, but not being tortured?

I feel that the contrapasso most fitting to the sin is in circle two, lust. Getting constantly blown around by the wind is just like having no control of your emotions when you have so much lust. I think that the contrapasso that is most unlike the sin is in the vestibule, being for oneself in the war between God and Satan. The maggots at their feet makes sense because they are not moving, just like them when they didn't choose a side. The wasps, however, don't make much sense, neither does the banner. Why are they running after it? I don't see the point in them running after it when they were just staying in one place, for themselves.

The contrapassos in both circles two and three are symbolic and fitting. The windstorm in circle two is constantly throwing around the bodies of the lustful. They did not have control over their emotions in life, so they do not receive control of their bodies in hell. Circle three is for the gluttonous. As I understood, they're punishment for indulging themselves (most commonly with food) during life, they are forced to lay in waste which is being eaten by Cerebus. Being a glutton was grimy and gross and so is their punishment. I suppose the contrapasso that I find least fitting would be the hoarders and the wasters having to carry around weights and run into each other.

Throughout Dante's circles of hell, it was interesting to see his version of punishment for each sin. The first circle, Limbo, makes sense to me in that these are the ones that were either not baptized or lived prior to Christianity. They live in the fog where they can't see God or be with God, yet do not suffer the horrible consequences of the other sins. The circle that seems the least fitting would be the third circle for the gluttons. It seems their punishment is way more severe than their sin. Their punishment seems greater than even the fourth circle; it seems a little unbalanced to me.

I found the contrapasso in cirlce two to be most symbolic of the sin. Because the lustful had little to no control over their emotions throughout their lives it was only fitting that they had no control over their bodies in the afterlife. I thought that was very fitting. The contrapasso I didn't necessarily agree with would be in the first circle dealing with the pagans. I didn't think it was necessarily fair to them to have to suffer for a sin that they didn't even know they were committing. Just because these people weren't alive at the time ideas of christianity came about doesn't mean that they should be punished in any way.

The most Symbolic contrapasso for me is the 3rd circle . Having to lay there in the slush for forever . That really has to suck . I don't know how I would be able to stand the pain and not being to move the same spot . But the less symbolic for me is Opportunist , chasing to banner is something that they shouldn't do . Because they did choose in the first place to begin with .

I think the wrathful on the shore of styx have no real correlation to a life in wrath. It seems weird to me that there fighting each other, out of all of the other contropasso's dante imagined im surprised this one was kind of lame. He had very creative stuff for the gluttonus and lustful and then there's people fighting on a shore with no real circle in hell. This was kind of a let down, couldn't you see the wrathful with their own circle before reading the book?
