Discuss the experience of writing as a group instead of an individual. What were the challenges you faced? What were the benefits? What did is cause you to do that you may not have done otherwise? Explain. You only need to respond to me, and your response must be at least 100 words.

I really liked writing this group essay. The group I was in was really productive and cooperative. We actually had a lot of fun working on this together. One of the challenges we faced was that we all had so many different ideas that could have worked in our essay so it was hard to narrow down which ones we wanted to elaborate on. One thing that was really awesome about our group was that we could bounce ideas off of each other. This way, if one of us couldn’t think of the right word, the rest of the group could kind of brainstorm to figure out what exactly we wanted to say. Working in a group helped me to really think through each of my ideas before I mentioned them to the others.

Writing as a group was easier in some ways and harder in others. The having to align your point of view with other people and come to an agreement of what to write was challenging. The benefits were being able to bounce ideas off of each other when you got stuck on a part. Another benefit was being able to have someone tell you if there was a better example from the book or a better way to write something. There was constant editing and rewriting going on to make sure that everything sounded okay and made sense with the point that we were trying to get across.

I really enjoyed writing as a group for this assignment. I feel like we all worked well together, respected the others ideas, and really pushed ourselves to use the best vocabulary and the best sentence structure. It was difficult at times to stay on track, but we managed to somehow finish our essay. It was also challenging sometimes to think of small ideas for such a large, monumental novel. I think I benefited from the subtle critics I received, like rephrasing my sentence so it includes more about... etc. Working as a group for this essay made me really pause and think about what would actually sound best in my essay. Generally I just write the first idea that comes to mind, but with a group we were able to play those ideas off of each other and the result was an essay I believe we're all very proud of.

Writing in a group was hard for me. I always have about a million ideas going on in my head and change my mind frequently before settling on my final draft of something. By working in a group it forced me to pick one from the get go and stick with it, because I can't go back and change something without consulting the others in the group. Because my mind runs at about a million miles an hour it was sort of hard to work in a group because once I get an idea, I pretty much know how I want the essay to go from start to finish, but that might not be the same idea as the rest of my group, so it forces me to listen a lot. Sometimes I feel like I might have spearheaded the essay a little too much, because I tend to just type and type until my ideas pan out, which doesn't always allow for other people to also type/throw out ideas. Groups are hard for me to say the least.

I think writing as a group, rather than individually, was more beneficial to creating an essay faster and with an already peer edited draft. Our group, however, had a different group dynamic than most of the other groups. First of all, we choose a prompt that no one else choose, which turned out to be a big mistake, but helpful in the sense of showing us a better path (prompt). After much debate (more like confusion of ideas) we decided after two days to switch prompts having only written one paragraph. The new prompt was full of possibilities and we were able divvy up paragraphs (due to time constraints). Also, once our group had a big picture, we were able to throw ideas off each other. This created a new group dynamic and we were then able to complete the essay in record time. Overall, I’d say group writing is easier for me and I think a fro most other people too.

There were some benefits to working as a group, but also some struggles. We were able to come up with lots of ideas and figured out how to put them into a structured essay. By myself, I think it would have taken much longer and would not have been as good. When we first started, we got distracted a lot. One thing would lead to another and the next thing you know we are talking about the latest kitten video (not really just an example). We really had to work to try and put all three of our ideas into a good and organized essay. That could be difficult at times. One person would have an idea and we may not have seen it that way or disagreed, but it was good to see all sides to the book.

I really enjoyed collaborating with others to write the essay. I think it gave me a lot of insight into how my groupmates viewed the book, which widened my perspective. It was really nice having people who cared about what everyone thought, rather than just one person doing it all by his/herself. I think that the benefits of collaborating were tremendous, and everyone gained much from the experience. If we had the opportunity to do this again, I would definitely snatch it.

Doing an essay as a small group was a nice mental exercise. Because of the partners, we were able to make a much better thought out essay. My partners could fill in any information that I had missed. One person could also do research while the others took notes or brainstormed. We also had a lot more time to do corrections and construct the body to our liking, which was nice. I realise that this was nothing like the actual AP exam, but it was still nice to do. The only challenges we really faced was that we disagreed on the meaning of a couple details, but we were able to smooth that out quickly. It was also kind of fun.

Writing the group essay was easier and harder in different ways. One of the challenges we faced was one of our three group members being absent for a day. We also struggled with our first prompt and how to turn our ideas into words. One of the benefits was not having to come up with an entire essay by ourselves. Having other people to brainstorm and write with made our writing out our ideas easier. Being in a group caused us to change our writings styles in ways that we would not have done if we were writing a solo essay. It was hard to find one voice.
