Discuss the experience of writing as a group instead of an individual. What were the challenges you faced? What were the benefits? What did is cause you to do that you may not have done otherwise? Explain. You only need to respond to me, and your response must be at least 100 words.

I have never really enjoyed group projects. I think I do my best work on my own, even if my group is composed of people I like. There are very few things that I am able to collaborate on and still have the work the way I like it. Group projects force me to slow down, which is sometimes a good thing, but generally it makes me lose track of my ideas. Since group essays are written with many different voices I also had to deal with wording that I, myself wouldn't have necessarily chosen. Writing in groups was fine, I just prefer doing it alone or with one person.

I love working in groups, however not when it is involved in writing an essay. It is extremely hard to all pick the same idea to write about, and to unify your voice as a whole. I mean I had a great group, it was just really hard to create an essay that sounded like all of us. I really liked the way the essay turned out. But agreeing with what Sarah said, it is extremely hard to slow down and try to get everyone's opinions in the essay instead of just being your own voice and deciding how everything should sound.

I didn’t really like writing with a group. It was really hard to incorporate all of our ideas together and make it appear as if one person wrote the essay. It was also very hard to incorporate everyone’s interpretation of the prompt to make it one idea. Some of the benefits to writing with a group was that we always had someone to critique and collaborate with doing the work. I think working as a group sort of caused me to hold back from what I normally would write because I was nervous that others would not agree with my idea.

I like writing in groups sometimes because I get second opinions and someone can sometimes word what I am thinking better than what I could have. Sometimes it is too slow if the group is too big. I like to work with usually one person so that I have that second opinion but I am not distracted with everone else and all those opinions. I like to work by myself at first then get with a friend to discuss what I wrote and how to make it better.

Working together as a group was helpful in situations when you need help putting your thoughts into words. Group essays also help in using an arrangement of vocabulary. Sometimes when it's just you writing it you tend to use the same words over and over again and not realize. With group members they can input new words. Grammar is also better with groups. We all check to make sure it's right. Some challenges were when group members didn't like your idea. It's hard to let it go when you truly believe that your idea is better. It's also hard to put down someone else's idea too though. You don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but it's important to understand that it's for the benefit of the essay. At some points in the essay I probably would've taken the essay in a different direction.

Working in groups can be great, but that really depends on the project. In this case, I'm not a huge fan. An essay is something that can be very specific and personal to the writer and when you have multiple writers, that gets tricky. Finding wording, or even main ideas, that each person in the group agrees upon can be very difficult. I got lucky because I had a really great group but I also understand that doesn't always happen. Somethings you can get put with people who either don't want to do the work - leaving you with everything - or people who are over-demanding and won't listen to your ideas. It can be hard to fully like your finished work when you weren't the only one involved.

Working in groups for things that take a lot of writing instead of artistic abilities is always difficult for me. Don't get me wrong, I love having second opinions on my word choice and having other people help me think of things outside of the box, but I can never focus because these are my friends. So, it is always really hard to stay on task because we have free reign over how much of the class time we really use. Of course, this is only our own faults, but for essays I tend to work better on my own. However, if this were for something artistic, I would have liked groups more.

Working in groups can be very helpful for certain projects but for writing essays it can be a little difficult. Different people have different writing styles and that can be kinda hard to combine into a fluid essay. It is nice though when you have someone that is better at writing certain pieces of an essay like the thesis for example. It did push me to work with people I wouldn't necessarily work with if I had the choice and I think that added a certain amount of pressure to prove myself to them. In the end, I think it was a successful essay because all of my group members agreed on a prompt and we all had individual talents to add to the essay.

Although I think the idea of brainstorming in a group is helpful, I wasn't fond of having have to write a solitary essay as a group. I personally didn't think writing as a group was efficient or effective. We wasted a lot of time trying to come up with sentences that everyone was content with. It would have been a lot easier if I could write what made sense in my head and not what my group wanted. It was difficult to incorporate everyone's ideas and still make the essay sound cohesive. I would much prefer writing the essay individually.

I enjoy working in groups in most cases, but not so much when writing an essay. I feel like it would have been much easier to write the essay myself, than rather having to change everyone's part they wrote to make it sound like one voice. All together it just takes more time to write a group essay instead of individual. However it would have been helpful if we would've created the essay by ourselves, then got in groups to peer edit each others essays.

I have never been a fan of group essays. Group projects in general don't bother me but when it comes to essays, I would much rather work alone. I always have difficulties finding the balance between letting other people contribute and not letting your own ideas be disregarded. It is always good to get fresh ideas and criticisms so that would be the benefit. I also prefer group projects that allow me to pick who I work with. It's really not anything against my group; I just find it easier to work with people when I've chosen them. I think when our groups are assigned we all automatically go in with some reservations which doesn't help the process of compromise. It's always difficult to try and take multiple interpretations and create a single voice essay. I think allowing us to choose our own partners lets us choose people that we share writing styles or opinions of the prompt with.

I am a very independent person. So when it comes to group projects, I really don't favor them by any means. When I first heard we had to write an essay, I was relieved to hear that we would be assigned partners because frankly I am not the best essay writer. It was very assuring to know there would be two other people who could tell me if I was doing a good job. I think our biggest challenge that we faces was unity. Don't get me wrong, my group got along very well, but we assigned paragraphs to each person, so our essay lacked unity. I actually really enjoyed my group and I thought it could have gone a lot worse.

I’m not typically a fan of any group projects because it never usually ends up with equal participation. My biggest problem was the prompt my group ended up doing was one of the only ones that I didn’t really know where to go or what to write. I like the brainstorming power of a group, but trying to make everyone’s individual voices into one voice to make a coherent essay is extremely difficult. We probably should have just had one person write the opinions and wording of the others into the essay to make it sound like one voice.

I dispise writing in groups. It is extremely difficult for me to work in a group on an essay. It is super hard to write the entire essay and make it sound like it was one person. This usually results in an essay that is written by mostly one person. Therefore it really isn't a group effort and there is only one person that is truly learning. I feel as though it would be better if we all wrote our own and came up with it. This would help us all learn much much better.

The big challenge was getting myself to talk. I'm very shy around people, even if it's people I've known for a long time. This made it hard for me to communicate my ideas. The group did, however, allow me to experience a different view and different ideas that I wouldn't have seen before. When three people are working together, three different views of the book are mashed together. This led me to write about things I otherwise wouldn't write about, and discuss things I didn't think would be discussed. Overall, I think it was very interesting, and the final essay turned out better as a group then it would've been individually.
